David Vela Cervera was born in 1967 in Zaragoza, Spain. He graduated at the University of Zaragoza, with the degree of Doctor in Spanish Philology specializing in the graphic illustration of the first third of the 20th century. He is working as a freelance artist concentrated mainly to illustrations and creation of cartoons. David Vela participated at many international cartoon competitions and has gained innumerable prizes and mentions (we can mention at least some of them: Prize of the Ministry of Culture, Int. Biennial of Humor, Gabrovo, Bulgaria 2013; Second Prize at the World Press Cartoon 2012, Lisbon, Portugal; Second Prize at the Int. Beggar Cartoon Contest 2012, China; First Prize at the Biennial 2010, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain; Honourable Mention at Porto Cartoon World Festival 2004, 2011 and 2012, Portugal). He has published several books: Ramon Gomez de la Serna: “Ninfas y calaveras”, 2013; David Vela: “Universo Mundo”, 2009; Gustavo Adolfo Becquer: “El monte de las animas”, 2009; Ramon Gomez de la Serna: “Los muertos y las muertas, 2008; Ramon Gomez de la Serna: “Bestiario de Greguerías”, 2007; Gustavo Adolfo Becquer: “Leyendas Aragonesas”, 2005). David Vela has collaborated with various companies of theater and children’s entertainment: Titiriteros de Binefar, Trip teatro (Brasil), Platforma de Animacion Infantil, Teatro Che y Moche, Teatro Luna de Arena (posters, illustrations, design of puppets, decorations, accessories and costume designs). He has written several articles and studies on Madrid illustrator Salvador Bartolozzi. Mr. Vela was responsible for illustration workshop and animation for lecture “La maleta de Ramón”. He is a member of FECO – Spain. David Vela is living and working in Zaragoza, Spain.
