PortoCartoon, a meeting with the social and artistic value of the caricature

“Without humor there is no democracy”, said Luiz Humberto Marcos, director of PortoCartoon World Festival, which is organized by the Press Museum of the Portuguese city of Porto, in the awards ceremony of the nineteenth edition of this contest, which involved 1500 works of more than Of 400 artists from 62 countries, and the Belgian caricaturist Luc Vernimmen won the highest prize in the central theme dedicated to the (in) sustainability of current tourism.
“With this Festival”, added Marcos, “the art of humor opens paths of reflection, clues to new looks, because the caricature has the particularity of situating ourselves in the present time, with an incidence in forgotten and transgressors, alerting, denouncing, revealing light on obscure aspects, without neutrality, exposing risks, lies and falsifications”.
*****
Tourism, central theme
“This is a very suggestive subject”, says the Galician cartoonist Xaquín Marín, member of the international jury, “with many readings and infinite possibilities, as evidenced by the massive response of the artists, which made the awards very difficult. Just see the winning drawings to check the quality of the work “.

“Is there a better place to travel, than Syria, where many cities are bombed and the people suffer the horrors of war?”, says the Belgian Luc Vernimmen, who with a creative design to which he has accustomed us, his expressive maturity, and a fierce criticism with a high share of irony and crudeness, shows a group of tourists arriving on their bus to a city “A” in that country, destroyed by the war that has forced six million Syrians to flee their homes.

Tourism – 1st Prize: Luc VERNIMMEN (BE)

And what about the “travelers” who perish in the sea trying to reach another shore, in search of a better future? Indonesian Jitet Kustana won the second prize, with his work “Bath on the beach”, full of irony and tragedy, in which tourist pleasure coexists with the tremendous drama of emigration.
*****
Tourism – 2nd Prize: Jitet KUSTANA (ID)
*****
For his part, Cuban-Mexican Angel Boligan won the third prize with a drawing that currently portrays the relations between the United States and Mexico, and the construction of a wall on the border of both countries, ordered by Donald Trump. With a metaphorical character, the wall becomes a guillotine.

Other drawings in the sample point to ethical issues, and where exaggeration is the element of comedy, such as travel agencies that promote visits to slums, to witness misery, exploring local tragedy as an exotic setting. Or something very current and real: the European borders that prevent the passage of non-European refugees.
“The cartoonist”, says Bernard Bouton, president of the FECO and member of the jury, “seems to speak of one issue, but refers to another. That is one of the keys to irony, a provocation on his part.”
The high quality of the works presented led the international jury to award 25 Mentions of Honor to artists from different countries. The Spanish David Vela was one of them, with a diptych, which is in his words “a tribute to Porto, where the Vikings came in the ninth century: in the first vignette come to war, and in the second they savor the wine Of Porto (with the anachronism of the Luis I bridge in wood)”.

Special prizes for the personal caricature
This year’s edition includes two special prizes of the personal caricature centered on two figures of world importance: the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) in evocation of the 80th anniversary of his famous painting Guernica, and Antonio Guterres (1949 -) Secretary general of the UN. The winners were, respectively, Dalcio Machado (Brazil) and Antonio Santos – Santiagu (Portugal). Both authors, awarded in other editions of PortoCartoon, show their excellence in drawing, and their capacity for psychological interpretation in personal caricature.

WORLD PRESS CARTOON – THE WINNERS
«Immigrants» from the Iranian Alireza PAKDEL
wins the 12th edition of WORLD PRESS CARTOON
The cartoon «Immigrants», by Iranian author Alireza Pakdel, was honoured with the Grand Prix of the 12th edition of WORLD PRESS CARTOON, the great annual event of humour drawing in the international press. First prize in the Cartoon Editorial category, the cartoon was published in the Iranian newspaper «Etemad» in August 2016. Among the nine winners of this edition, the author raised the highest monetary prize in the amount of 10,000 euros. Still in this category, the jury awarded the 2nd prize to «Nice Attack», from the Greek Michael Kountouris (published in the newspaper Efimerida Ton Syntakton), and the 3rd prize for the «Welcome» by the French cartoonist Sunnerberg Constantin (published by Courrier International).
The awards ceremony took place in a show where humour reigned, with the presence of important personalities from international cartooning and the cultural landscape of Caldas da Rainha, the city hosting the 2017 event. The salon director, the Portuguese cartoonist António Antunes, highlighted the important role that humour has for the vitality of the press: «Cartoons are a critical segment and an exercise of freedom, without which newspapers can not survive and fulfil their social and civic goals.» The mayor of Caldas da Rainha, Fernando Tinta Ferreira, highlighted the international projection that World Press Cartoon brings to the city: «This is an event that brings to Caldas da Rainha great artists from all over the world who find, as is our tradition, an environment conducive to creation in freedom. In a city marked by the work of the great caricaturist tradition of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro it is natural and logical this connection to a contest that celebrates what is best done in the world in this art.»
The World Press Cartoon also distinguishes works in two other categories. In Caricatura, two winning pieces came from Brazil: a Fidel Castro by Luiz Carlos Fernandes, published in the magazine Veja, and a Bob Dylan by Eduardo Baptistão, published in the Diário do Grande ABC, first and second prizes respectively. The 3rd prize, for a «Trump Punk» from the pages of the newspaper Unità, was awarded to the Italian artist Mariagrazia Quaranta. In the category of Gag Cartoon, the first prize was awarded to the Serbian Toshow Borkovic, for the work «The Speaker», the 2nd prize went to «Rio», from the Swiss Silvan Wegmann, and the 3rd prize distinguished «Ludopatia», from the Ecuadorian author Xavier Bonilla. Works carried out for the publications Ilustrovarna Politika, Schweiz am Sonntag and Our World, respectively.
All these cartoons are part of the selection made by an international jury among the hundreds of works presented to the contest and coming from all continents. This selection of the 267 best competing works forms the exhibition that will be open to the public at the Cultural and Congress Center of Caldas da Rainha, with free admission, starting today and until August 10. Cartoons that shape a fun portrait of the world, published in 168 newspapers and magazines in 51 countries. The visitor can take all these drawings home: to do so, just buy the beautiful catalogue, for sale at the exhibition site.

“We like to choose themes that are not so evident, we really try to force the cartoonist to be creative. A lot of cartoonists let us know that ‘Soil Pollution and – sanitation’ was not a very asy topic, and itis a topic that is not every where in the world on the political agenda.”, says Rudy Gheysens

SALON MERCOSUR, ARGENTINA – THE WINNERS
The prize giving at the 18th Salon Mercosur of Humor International
Written by: Francisco Punal Suarez
In the capital of Argentina vibrated emotions on the award ceremony of the 18th Salon International Mercosur, organized by the Volpe Steseens Cultural Foundation and the Museum of Graphic Humor and Writing of Diogenes Taborda, celebrating the tenth anniversary of its creation, at this event dedicated to caricature, illustration and comicon the theme Tango.
This time participate artists from 64 countries, demonstrating that the topic is a perennial source of inspiration. Authors from countries as distant from the Latin culture as Bangladesh, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Jordan, Lithuania, Denmark, Ukraine, Lebanon, Norway, Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, Taiwan, among others, sent their works.
A jury composed of Blotta Oskar, illustrator, cartoonist and Argentinean businessman, Jose Maria Kokubu Munzón, National Academy of Tango, Romulo Berruti, journalist specializing in theater, film and tango; Santiago Cornejo, Director of Humour Supplement “Catrasca”; Lili Gardés, Professor of Communication Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences (UBA); Jorge Volpe Stessens, director of the Museum of Graphic Humour of Diogenes Taborda, and Marcelo Oliveri, Secretary of the Academy of Lunfardo Portena, presented the awards to: Doru Axinte (Romania) in humor; Alexander Kostenko (Ukraine) in illustration; Walter Toscano (Peru) in personal caricature, Mihai Ignat (Romania) in comics. There were also special awards Guaico (Colombia), Juli Sanchis “Harca” (Spain), Gustavo Gonzalez, Jose Sepi, both of Argentina, Arturo Yepez (Puerto Rico), among others.
The Museum of Graphic Humour and Writing of Diogenes Taborda was created on 21 September 2003 by the Volpe Stessens Cultural Foundation with the aim of organizing regularly temporary exhibitions, individual or collective at its headquarters, and in museums, cultural centers, universities, schools and companies who are interested in learning about and appreciate the graphic humor, which confirms their sense of solidarity and their desire to strengthen cultural exchange.
The cultural work of the Foundation is broad and diverse: also organizes exhibitions of photography, prints, painting, sculpture, organizes free workshops of graphic humor, concerts, cultural tourism, theatrical exhibitions, literary presentations, lectures, debates, etc., which has earned several awards from official organizations in the country.
In the Salons of the Museum of Diogenes Taborda resonate the words expressed by the writer Jorge Luis Borges in one of four lectures he spoke in October 1965 in Buenos Aires, on the beloved musical genre: “Hearing an old tango we know that there were brave men. Tango gives us all an imaginary past. Studying the tango is not useless, is to study the various vicissitudes of the soul Argentina”.
